OUT IN THE WORLD

TREMENDOUS
Recess Activities, Inc.
March 27-June 12, 2010
Middling Reception Saturday, May 1, 6:30-9:30pm

As an artist-in-residence at Recess, I, Kara Hearn, am embarking on an overwhelming, absurd, and unwieldy project. Out of a sea of stories, fantasies, scenarios, genres, and sources I intend to build a coherent, engaging feature length video about dealing (continuing on) in the face of crushing circumstances, be they imagined or real, devastating or awe-inspiring. It might go something like this: Bill Murray and Friday Night Lights meet and fall in love. They have a run in with some wild animals and lose consciousness but while they are out they have mutual dream about getting obliterated by a tidal wave but it’s okay because it is amazingly huge and beautiful and there is nothing they can do about it so they just let go, it pummels them, and they die but it’s okay. Really. It’s okay.
Alright, so it won’t really go like that but it just might feel something like that and you can certainly expect to see all of those elements mixed up with a bunch of other stuff, maybe even some of your stuff. I’m pretty sure I’m not supposed to say this but I am scared. I have a sword. I am trying to be brave but I need help. Beginning April 7 please stop by 41 Grand Street in Manhattan, Wed.- Sat. 12-6pm. While I am hoping some of you will be up for being actors, performers, subjects I also welcome quiet observation, vocal sounding boards, and new sources of content. This is an exhibition, studio practice, and public space all mixed up into one. Messy right? Come help me sort it out.

Material & deStructure: The Creative Alternative in Art
PG Contemporary & Poissant Gallery
April 16-May 8, 2010
Opening reception: Friday, April 16, 6-8pm

The Temporary and Heroic Transcendence of One's Fate will be on view with a few of my photographs. Material & deStructure takes a look at artists who are creating work that use every day materials in a modified, broken down aesthetic.  Stretching the possibilities of art-making, whether by video, sculpture, painting or installation, this exhibition explores the concept of material as object with the aim of connecting the disciplines of fine art, design, craft and performance art in a unified manner. Other artists include Allison Wiese, Danny Yahav Brown, Donna Huanca, Eric Faggin, J. Hill, Jeff Forster, Julia Rometti, Marzia Faggin, Michelle Rosenberg, Molly Lowe, Paul Kittelson, Robert Jackson Harrington, Seth Mittag, Stephanie Martz, and Wendy Wagner.

BUFFET: all you can eat video, issue no. 1

I collaborated with Houston based artists, Kelly Pike and Sasha Dela to create and curate this experimental video-based periodical. Since the city of Houston is itself an endless sterno-warmed parade of variety (food, weather, culture) and a large inspiration behind this project, it seemed only natural to make it the theme of our first issue. We are thrilled to present a diverse and delicious collection of videos ranging from stop motion animation and performance art to music video and power point. Featured artists include Chelsea Beck, Susan Chen, Rachel Cook, Jonathan Durham, Galería Perdida, Jonn Herschend, Lauren Kelly, Laura Lark, Cody Ledvina, Sharad Patel, Nancy Popp, Kelly Sears, James Sham, Hilary Wilder, and Daniel Zajicek. The dvd is $25 and can be purchased online at www.buffetdvd.com or in person at DOMY Books in Houston and Austin, Frankenart Mart in San Francisco, and Printed Matter in New York.
